    Holographic Magnetic Star

    A warm fermionic AdS star under a homogeneous magnetic field is explored. We obtain the relativistic Landau levels by using Dirac equation and use the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation to study the physical profiles of the star. Bulk properties such as sound speed, adiabatic index, and entropy density within the star are calculated analytically and numerically. Bulk temperature increases the mass limit of the AdS star but external magnetic field has the opposite effect. The results are partially interpreted in terms of the pre-thermalization process of the gauge matter at the AdS boundary after the mass injection. The entropy density is found to demonstrate similar temperature dependence as the magnetic black brane in the AdS in certain limits regardless of the different nature of the bulk and Hawking temperatures. Total entropy of the AdS star is also found to be an increasing function of the bulk temperature and a decreasing function of the magnetic field, similar behaviour to the mass limit. Since both total entropy and mass limit are global quantities, they could provide some hints to the value of entropy and energy of the dual gauge matter before and during the thermalization.Comment: 39 pages, 14 figures, 1 table, comments and references added, to appear in JHE

    Effect of teeth micro-geometrical form modification on contact kinematics and efficiency of high performance transmissions

    Light weight, compactness and efficiency are key objectives in high performance vehicular transmission systems, which are subject to large variations in torque and power. Pitch line velocities of up to 52 m/s and teeth pair contact pressures of up to 3 GPa are routinely encountered under race conditions. Contact patch asymmetry due to angular misalignments between input and output shafts leads to the generation of high edge stress discontinuities on gear flanks, inducing fatigue spalling which affects system durability. Crowning is widely used as a palliative measure to mitigate these undesired effects. These problems can be further exacerbated by contact footprint truncation. The paper presents a new approach to modelling the kinematics and contact micro-geometry of meshing conjunctions of involute spur gears with profile and lead modifications. A time-efficient analytical method is presented to accurately determine the contact footprint and kinematics, leading to the solution of highly loaded non-Newtonian mixed thermo-elastohydrodynamic contact under the extreme prevalent conditions of high performance vehicular transmissions. The effect of tooth form modification on contact footprint truncation, contact kinematics and generated frictional power loss is investigated.     Oxygen uptake and denitrification in soil aggregates

    A mathematical model of oxygen uptake by bacteria in agricultural soils is presented with the goal of predicting anaerobic regions in which denitrification occurs. In an environment with a plentiful supply of oxygen, microorganisms consume oxygen through normal respiration. When the local oxygen concentration falls below a threshold level, denitrification may take place leading to the release of nitrous oxide, a potent agent for global warming. A two-dimensional model is presented in which one or more circular soil aggregates are located at a distance below the ground-level at which the prevailing oxygen concentration is prescribed. The level of denitrification is estimated by computing the area of any anaerobic cores which may develop in the interior of the aggregates. The oxygen distribution throughout the model soil is calculated first for an aggregated soil for which the ratio of the oxygen diffusivities between an aggregate and its surround is small via an asymptotic analysis. Second, the case of a non-aggregated soil featuring one or more microbial hotspots, for which the diffusion ratio is arbitrary, is examined numerically using the boundary-element method. Calculations with multiple aggregates demonstrate a sheltering effect whereby some aggregates receive less oxygen than their neighbours. In the case of an infinite regular triangular network representing an aggregated soil, it is shown that there is an optimal inter-aggregate spacing which minimises the total anaerobic core area

    Do oral aluminium phosphate binders cause accumulation of aluminium to toxic levels?

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Aluminium (Al) toxicity was frequent in the 1980s in patients ingesting Al containing phosphate binders (Alucaps) whilst having HD using water potentially contaminated with Al. The aim of this study was to determine the risk of Al toxicity in HD patients receiving Alucaps but never exposed to contaminated dialysate water.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>HD patients only treated with Reverse Osmosis(RO) treated dialysis water with either current or past exposure to Alucaps were given standardised DFO tests. Post-DFO serum Al level > 3.0 μmol/L was defined to indicate toxic loads based on previous bone biopsy studies.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>39 patients (34 anuric) were studied. Mean dose of Alucap was 3.5 capsules/d over 23.0 months. Pre-DFO Al levels were > 1.0 μmol/L in only 2 patients and none were > 3.0 μmol/L. No patients had a post DFO Al levels > 3.0 μmol/L. There were no correlations between the serum Al concentrations (pre-, post- or the incremental rise after DFO administration) and the total amount of Al ingested.</p> <p>No patients had unexplained EPO resistance or biochemical evidence of adynamic bone.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Although this is a small study, oral aluminium exposure was considerable. Yet no patients undergoing HD with RO treated water had evidence of Al toxicity despite doses equivalent to 3.5 capsules of Alucap for 2 years. The relationship between the DFO-Al results and the total amount of Al ingested was weak (R<sup>2 </sup>= 0.07) and not statistically significant. In an era of financial prudence, and in view of the recognised risk of excess calcium loading in dialysis patients, perhaps we should re-evaluate the risk of using Al-based phosphate binders in HD patients who remain uric.</p

    Change escalation processes and complex adaptive systems: from incremental reconfigurations to discontinuous restructuring

    This study examines when “incremental” change is likely to trigger “discontinuous” change, using the lens of complex adaptive systems theory. Going beyond the simulations and case studies through which complex adaptive systems have been approached so far, we study the relationship between incremental organizational reconfigurations and discontinuous organizational restructurings using a large-scale database of U.S. Fortune 50 industrial corporations. We develop two types of escalation process in organizations: accumulation and perturbation. Under ordinary conditions, it is perturbation rather than the accumulation that is more likely to trigger subsequent discontinuous change. Consistent with complex adaptive systems theory, organizations are more sensitive to both accumulation and perturbation in conditions of heightened disequilibrium. Contrary to expectations, highly interconnected organizations are not more liable to discontinuous change. We conclude with implications for further research, especially the need to attend to the potential role of managerial design and coping when transferring complex adaptive systems theory from natural systems to organizational systems

    Dopamine Beta Hydroxylase Genotype Identifies Individuals Less Susceptible to Bias in Computer-Assisted Decision Making

    Computerized aiding systems can assist human decision makers in complex tasks but can impair performance when they provide incorrect advice that humans erroneously follow, a phenomenon known as “automation bias.” The extent to which people exhibit automation bias varies significantly and may reflect inter-individual variation in the capacity of working memory and the efficiency of executive function, both of which are highly heritable and under dopaminergic and noradrenergic control in prefrontal cortex. The dopamine beta hydroxylase (DBH) gene is thought to regulate the differential availability of dopamine and norepinephrine in prefrontal cortex. We therefore examined decision-making performance under imperfect computer aiding in 100 participants performing a simulated command and control task. Based on two single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) of the DBH gene, −1041 C/T (rs1611115) and 444 G/A (rs1108580), participants were divided into groups of low and high DBH enzyme activity, where low enzyme activity is associated with greater dopamine relative to norepinephrine levels in cortex. Compared to those in the high DBH enzyme activity group, individuals in the low DBH enzyme activity group were more accurate and speedier in their decisions when incorrect advice was given and verified automation recommendations more frequently. These results indicate that a gene that regulates relative prefrontal cortex dopamine availability, DBH, can identify those individuals who are less susceptible to bias in using computerized decision-aiding systems

    The association of APOE genotype and cognitive decline in interaction with risk factors in a 65–69 year old community sample

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>While the evidence of an association between the apolipoprotein E (<it>APOE</it>) <it>*E4 </it>allele and Alzheimer's disease is very strong, the effect of the <it>*E4 </it>allele on cognitive decline in the general population is more equivocal. A cross-sectional study on the lifespan effects of the <it>*E4 </it>allele <abbrgrp><abbr bid="B1">1</abbr></abbrgrp> failed to find any effect of the <it>*E4 </it>allele on cognitive performance at ages 20–24, 40–44 or 60–64 years.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In this four year follow-up study, we reexamine the effect of <it>*E4 </it>in the sample of 2,021 individuals, now aged 65–69 years.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Performance on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was significantly poorer for <it>*E4 </it>homozygotes than heterozygotes or non-carriers. The effects of the <it>*E4 </it>genotype on cognitive decline over four years were found on the MMSE and Symbol-Digit Modalities test but only when controlling for risk factors such as head injury and education. Analyses were repeated with the exclusion of participants diagnosed with a mild cognitive disorder, with little change.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>It is possible that <it>*E4 </it>carriers become vulnerable to greater cognitive decline in the presence of other risk factors at 65–69 years of age.</p

    Malaria Prevalence in Endemic Districts of Bangladesh

    BACKGROUND: Following the 1971 ban of DDT in Bangladesh, malaria cases have increased steadily. Malaria persists as a major health problem in the thirteen south-eastern and north-eastern districts of Bangladesh. At present the national malaria control program, largely supported by the Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM), provides interventions including advocacy at community level, Insecticide Treated Net (ITN) distribution, introduction of Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDT) and combination therapy with Coartem. It is imperative, therefore, that baseline data on malaria prevalence and other malaria indicators are collected to assess the effectiveness of the interventions and rationalize the prevention and control efforts. The objective of this study was to obtain this baseline on the prevalence of malaria and bed net use in the thirteen malaria endemic districts of Bangladesh. METHODS AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In 2007, BRAC and ICDDR,B carried out a malaria prevalence survey in thirteen malaria endemic districts of Bangladesh. A multi-stage cluster sampling technique was used and 9750 blood samples were collected. Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDT) were used for the diagnosis of malaria. The weighted average malaria prevalence in the thirteen endemic districts was 3.97%. In five south-eastern districts weighted average malaria prevalence rate was 6.00% and in the eight north-eastern districts weighted average malaria prevalence rate was (0.40%). The highest malaria prevalence was observed in Khagrachari district. The majority of the cases (90.18%) were P. falciparum infections. Malaria morbidity rates in five south-eastern districts was 2.94%. In eight north-eastern districts, morbidity was 0.07%. CONCLUSION AND SIGNIFICANCE: Bangladesh has hypoendemic malaria with P. falciparum the dominant parasite species. The malaria situation in the five north-eastern districts of Bangladesh in particular warrants urgent attention.     An affordable, quality-assured community-based system for high-resolution entomological surveillance of vector mosquitoes that reflects human malaria infection risk patterns.

    ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: More sensitive and scalable entomological surveillance tools are required to monitor low levels of transmission that are increasingly common across the tropics, particularly where vector control has been successful. A large-scale larviciding programme in urban Dar es Salaam, Tanzania is supported by a community-based (CB) system for trapping adult mosquito densities to monitor programme performance. Methodology An intensive and extensive CB system for routine, longitudinal, programmatic surveillance of malaria vectors and other mosquitoes using the Ifakara Tent Trap (ITT-C) was developed in Urban Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and validated by comparison with quality assurance (QA) surveys using either ITT-C or human landing catches (HLC), as well as a cross-sectional survey of malaria parasite prevalence in the same housing compounds. RESULTS: Community-based ITT-C had much lower sensitivity per person-night of sampling than HLC (Relative Rate (RR) [95% Confidence Interval (CI)] = 0.079 [0.051, 0.121], P < 0.001 for Anopheles gambiae s.l. and 0.153 [0.137, 0.171], P < 0.001 for Culicines) but only moderately differed from QA surveys with the same trap (0.536 [0.406,0.617], P = 0.001 and 0.747 [0.677,0.824], P < 0.001, for An. gambiae or Culex respectively). Despite the poor sensitivity of the ITT per night of sampling, when CB-ITT was compared with QA-HLC, it proved at least comparably sensitive in absolute terms (171 versus 169 primary vectors caught) and cost-effective (153USversus187US versus 187US per An. gambiae caught) because it allowed more spatially extensive and temporally intensive sampling (4284 versus 335 trap nights distributed over 615 versus 240 locations with a mean number of samples per year of 143 versus 141). Despite the very low vectors densities (Annual estimate of about 170 An gambiae s.l bites per person per year), CB-ITT was the only entomological predictor of parasite infection risk (Odds Ratio [95% CI] = 4.43[3.027,7. 454] per An. gambiae or Anopheles funestus caught per night, P =0.0373). Discussion and conclusion CB trapping approaches could be improved with more sensitive traps, but already offer a practical, safe and affordable system for routine programmatic mosquito surveillance and clusters could be distributed across entire countries by adapting the sample submission and quality assurance procedures accordingly
